Construction Support Services

GEI Consultants designs solutions for a unique mix of challenges, such as tight space, neighboring buildings, contamination, complex regulations, community concerns and more. Since our founding in 1970, GEI has provided geotechnical engineering services for countless landmark horizontal and vertical construction projects including power, commercial, institutional and industrial buildings and structures; flood control and water storage, supply and conveyance systems; tunnels, highways, roads and bridges; coastal engineering; slurry walls, tiebacks, and excavation support systems, to name a few.

GEI has worked extensively with contractors to provide design services for excavation support and dewatering systems, and underpinning of structures. Our construction capability also includes the design of instrumentation systems to monitor the effect of construction activities on adjacent structures.

Our experience in both pre-bid assistance and design services has enabled GEI to build a strong reputation for providing creative, practical, and cost-effective solutions and alternatives to the many geotechnical and environmental challenges that often arise during construction.

Construction QA and Testing

GEI has extensive experience in Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) and testing. We contribute to the overall success of a project by providing outstanding service and innovative solutions to problems encountered in the field. Our staff consists of seasoned construction managers to coordinate the activities of all involved parties, as well as on-site CQA technicians. Our focus is to provide an overall value to the project in addition to completing the regulatory requirements for CQA.

Our CQA services include:

  • Development of CQA plans to support permit applications.
  • Preparation of construction drawings and bid packages
  • Constructability Reviews of permit applications and bid packages
  • Test Pad construction and in-place permeability testing to prequalify materials and construction techniques
  • Full service in-house geotechnical laboratory testing to support the CQA program
  • Full-time observation, testing and documentation of:
  • Clay liner construction
  • Geosynthetic materials installation
  • Leachate collection system
  • Landfill gas extraction system
  • Leachate storage tanks and secondary containments
  • Slurry wall construction
  • Amended soil liners
  • Construction management support to facilitate the interaction of the contractors as the owner’s representative.
  • Preparation of as-built documentation reports for submittal to regulatory agencies.
  • Strong on-site expertise to clients during the construction phase.
  • We recognize the importance of quick turn around on construction documentation reporting; clear and effective communications between all parties; and highest levels of responsiveness to the client.

    Dewatering

GEI’s services include design of dewatering systems ranging from simple pumps to deep extraction and recharge well systems. We evaluate alternatives to minimize dewatering costs, protect adjacent property and resources, and minimize the quantity of contaminated ground water to be treated or removed from the site.

A number of projects have included excavation and backfill under water to minimize dewatering costs. Our dewatering designs have been integrated with excavation support or barrier wall systems to minimize the quantities of contaminated water that is pumped and treated. Our evaluations include base stability of the excavation as well as impacts of dewatering on adjacent buildings and utilities.

    Pre-Bid Assistance and Value Engineering

The difference between a contractor winning or losing a bid or negotiated contract often lies in the development of creative approaches to construction. GEI has a long history of working closely with leading contractors to develop and engineer such creative approaches during both the bidding and construction phases of projects. We offer many services for the contractor's team:

  • Evaluate the design requirements, subsurface conditions, and the contractor's available and preferred methods of construction, including materials and equipment
  • Perform engineering analyses to develop and evaluate alternative construction methods and assist in selecting an cost-effective, low risk approaches
  • Prepare design sketches and notes in support of the contractor's take-off and bidding,
  • Once a project is won, prepare engineering design documents, including stamped drawings and reports to support contractor-proposed alternatives in the owner's review and approval process
  • Provide engineering support for formal and informal value engineering processes
  • Contractor Design Services

GEI works with contractors in both design-build and traditional design-bid-build settings to provide engineering services for temporary works and/or permanent components of a project. We balance cost effectiveness with innovative design to help control project costs and tight schedules. Our oversight further helps contractors more speedily resolve and repair problems that may develop during construction.
