Industrial Maintenance Electrician Salary

Industrial electricians perform a variety of functions related to electrical controls, equipment, and wiring in an industrial plant or worksite. Their work may involve testing, troubleshooting, installation, and repair of the electrical components. In addition, they read and interpret blueprints and specifications, as well as remain current on electrical code specifications for the area.

Industrial electricians work for a variety of employers, including electrical firms, parts manufacturers, and steel producers. They can work as an independent contractor or on a full time basis for one employer. They typically work a 40-hour work week; however, the days may vary and include weekends, evenings, and/or overtime. Industrial electricians may work on a small team with other industrial electricians or alone; they usually report to a shift supervisor or plant manager.

Typically, industrial electricians work in an industrial environment, which can be noisy, dusty, and involve the use of personal safety equipment. They may have to climb, crawl, and work in very tight spaces. Some employers may also require an ability to lift 50 pounds.

Industrial electricians must complete high school and complete an apprenticeship program in industrial electricity to receive a journeyman electrician license. Employers may prefer a master electrician license. In addition, industrial electricians need to be able to operate a variety of shop equipment and have basic computer skills . Strong communication skills are a necessity to communicate issues and resolutions, and also for safety.

Industrial Electrician Tasks

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities on equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair material handling equipment.
  • Support customers by effectively interfacing with customer and office in repairing equipment as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment.
